Therapy

Is a personal process of growth and self-discovery, in a safe space. Sometimes one’s way of dealing with difficulties may have less sustainable outcomes, leaving one feeling hopeless and out of control. It is important to find an environment that allows you to be open, feel accepted and understood.

Finding a therapist

The task of looking for a therapist can be daunting and sometimes approached with ambivalence. Mental health is an important part of life. It is ultimately about the journey towards improving ones’ quality of life and that of their family and/or community. I aim to offer a safe, supportive space that allows clients the time and patience needed to better understand themselves and their presenting concerns. Therapy is tailored according to the clients’ needs, with the hope of creating deep insight and enduring changes in their lives.

About Johanna Maphosa

Counselling Psychologist

I am registered Counselling Psychologist with the Health Professions Council of South Africa. I completed my Masters degree from Wits University in 2003 and have since been working therapeutically with children and adults. I have trained in the Psycho-dynamic orientation and also practice an integrative approach to therapy depending on the needs of the individual. I offer both brief and on-going counselling at my practices and at Life Poortview Hospital (Westrand).

My past clinical experiences include training at Rahima Moosa hospital and Helen Joseph Hospital, offering counselling and psychological assessments to both children and adults. I have significant time in the Employee Wellness Services environment, offering counselling for various corporate companies. I also have keen interest in working with groups. I have been offering Group debriefings and ran an on-going Support group at a Hospice clinic branch.

My areas of interest include working deeply with aspects of identity, mood disorders, self-esteem and diversity in our multiracial community. I believe that it is in developing good self-insight, in a safe space, that an individual is able to move towards the space of wholeness and the life they may wish for.

I conduct therapy in EnglishSotho and Zulu.
